The Shendishover court on the Lower East Side

The Lower East Side became the permanent American seat of Shendishov under Rabbi Yisroel Dovid Horowitz: a home and beis medrash of tefillah, tishen, Torah, counsel, hospitality and public responsibility.

A ציבור before the permanent court

Families and Chassidim from Shendishov and neighboring Galician towns had already organized in New York before Rabbi Tuvia’s first journey. His visits in the 1920s gave that ציבור a living center.

Rabbi Yisroel Dovid

Before returning to Poland in 1929, Rabbi Tuvia entrusted the American beis medrash and ציבור to his son Rabbi Yisroel Dovid. The East Side house became known for tefillah and tishen, counsel and brachah, hospitality, chinuch and work with other Rebbes and rabbanim.

A community visible in its records

The 1936 society constitution and the 1948 dinner journal preserve officers, committees, women’s activity, advertisements, families and supporters. Together they show an established communal world, not merely the memory of one personality.
